“I am the true vine, and my Father is the gardener… Remain in me, as I also remain in you. No branch can bear fruit by itself; it must remain in the vine.” — John 15:1,4 (NIV)
It was an ordinary drive on an ordinary day — until it wasn’t.
I had been scrolling through podcasts, looking for something “productive” to fill the drive. News commentary, leadership training, even a little motivational coaching — all good things, right?
But somewhere between the second traffic light and the third sharp turn, I felt the nudge: “You are what you feed on.” It wasn’t a judgment. It was an invitation. A wake-up call. A reminder from the Holy Spirit that even good input can become a distraction if it’s not from the Source.
That still small voice led me straight into John 15: the vine, the branch, and the One who prunes with purpose.
You’ve Heard It Said: You Are What You Eat
There’s some truth in that. But the deeper reality? You are what you hear. You are what you watch. You are what you meditate on. In other words, you are a conduit of whatever is feeding you.
You don’t just intake information. You become it. You don’t just listen to thoughts. You live them. Your heart becomes a channel for whatever voices, values, and visions you allow in.
If you’re connected to fear, your life will echo with anxiety. If you’re rooted in comparison, you’ll reap insecurity and strive for worth. If you feast on criticism, cynicism will be your default lens. But if you remain in Christ, you’ll produce the fruit of His life — not your own efforts.
The Branch Doesn’t Strive. It Abides.
Let’s take Jesus at His Word. He didn’t say, “Be the vine.” He said, “I am the Vine.” You are the branch. You were not created to produce life on your own — only to carry it, to reveal it, to reflect the Source you’re connected to.
You don’t have to manufacture love, joy, peace, patience… You simply need to stay connected to the One who is the fullness of all those things. Everything you need to live the life God has called you to is not found in you — it flows through you when you’re rooted in Him.
Your Output is Evidence of Your Connection
When the fruit of our lives doesn’t look like Jesus, the issue isn’t behavior — it’s connection.
We live in a culture obsessed with output — achievement, productivity, visibility. But God is more interested in alignment. Who are you connected to? What are you abiding in? Whose voice is shaping you?
Because you are always becoming someone. You are always producing something. Even your silence, your mood, your tone — it’s all fruit of something. And that “something” is your source.
The Gardener is Not Passive. He is Present.
Jesus said His Father is the Gardener — the One who prunes every branch to make it more fruitful. That means even when it feels like God is cutting things away, He’s not punishing you — He’s preparing you. Pruning isn’t proof of rejection. It’s proof of connection. He only prunes what He intends to use.
So when relationships end… when platforms are stripped back… when your voice feels hidden… don’t resist it. It might just be your season of pruning. And that’s when the deepest growth takes place — below the surface, where only the Gardener can see.
A Word for the Bride: Be Found Ready
This isn’t just about sustainable living or healthy emotional rhythms. This is about eternity. Jesus is returning — not for a people producing fruit by worldly effort, but for a Bride who has learned to abide.
He’s coming for those who are not tethered to culture but rooted in Christ. He’s coming for those whose oil is full, whose hearts are tender, whose minds are renewed. He’s coming for branches connected to the Vine, not tangled in counterfeit sources.
You can’t afford to remain connected to fear. You can’t afford to keep feeding on entertainment that slowly desensitizes your spirit. You can’t keep scrolling through criticism, bathing in comparison, and wonder why you feel dry.
Now is the time to unplug from the world — and plug into the Word. Now is the time to abide, to be pruned, to be filled. Now is the time to be found ready.
Reflection Questions
- What are you feeding on daily — mentally, emotionally, spiritually?
- Where is your true source of identity, hope, and behavior coming from?
- Are there any false vines (relationships, influences, ideas) you need to disconnect from?
Action Step: Conduct a Connection Audit
Take 10 minutes today to examine your sources. Who are you listening to the most? What’s shaping your thinking? Where are your affections anchored?
Then ask: Is this feeding my spirit — or draining my soul? Realign. Repent. Reconnect to the True Vine.
Prayer of Abiding
Father, You are the Gardener of my soul. You see every branch, every fruit, every hidden motive. Jesus, You are the Vine — my only true Source of life. Forgive me for the times I’ve drawn from the world, when I’ve fed on fear, judgment, or distraction. I return to You. I choose to abide. Prune me. Cleanse me. Fill me. Let Your Word shape my thoughts, Let Your Spirit govern my desires, Let Your life be my only output. Make me ready for Your return. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
You are not your source. You are not your sustainer. You are the branch — designed to carry the divine. So stay connected. Stay clean. Stay close. Be the conduit of Heaven — and bear the fruit that remains.
